ABOUT REAL ACTION

Real Action is a community-led educational charity set up in 1997 to provide effective educational solutions to some of the most challenging problems in neighbourhoods designated as exceptionally - and multiply - disadvantaged. The charity operates from its headquarters The Learning Store, in a neighbourhood with a reputation for high crime levels and youth anti-social behaviour. This is in and around the Mozart Estate, north of the Harrow Road in West London. Real Action specialises in sourcing, developing and delivering proven-effective, structured, basic education programmes capable of transforming the lives of its clientele of children, teenagers and adults.

GROWN BY WORD-OF-MOUTH Real Action has grown by word-of-mouth for over thirteen years - with an ever-growing waiting list. Funds are needed to keep it going and help it grow.

FOUNDED IN 1997 Real Action was founded in 1997 by Roger Diamond. Co-founder and educational specialist Katie Ivens introduced Irina Tyk's Butterfly literacy course to Real Action. Real Action's  Founding Committee was put together by Roger in1996 after the success of the two week pilot Butterfly summer shool held on Mozart Estate. Besides Roger and Katie, the founding committee was composed of local businessmen, local residents and parents living in a notably beleaguered, 'multiply deprived' inner London neighbourhood.

The charity is independent, innovative and community-led. Real Action works tirelessly in fulfillment of its ethos of 'service by the community for the community'. There is always a waiting list for places. Real Action partly funds itself by running English as a second language classes (called English Express). Financial support is also needed from private donations and charitable trusts etc. to keep Real Action's charitable work going.
